Woman Reunited With Father’s Purple Heart

Published: February 16, 2006

A woman was given back possession of her father’s Purple Heart Thursday, 40 years after he was killed. The Purple Heart and other military medals and pins belonging to Rebecca Krings father had been kept in a safety deposit box until the bank it was stored in closed.

A couple of weeks ago, the state treasurer’s office had asked for help finding the rightful owner of the medals. The treasurer’s office took possession of the safety box’s contents as part of the Great Colorado Payback program.

Krings had also lost track of the safety deposit box over the years. She was 5-years-old when her father died in the Vietnam War. All she had were some black and white photos of her with him.

After the state treasurer’s first appeal two weeks ago, a Rocky Mountain News reporter tracked down the soldier’s history and found Krings living in Commerce City.

“I can open my arms and instead of saying goodbye to daddy, I can say hello,” Krings said Thursday.

Thursday, the state treasurer’s office gave her the Purple Heart and other medals along with her father’s wedding rings, harmonica and notebooks that her father had taken with to war. All of the items had been in the safety deposit box.

A local bank has offered to send Krings and a friend to Washington, D.C. so she can see the Vietnam War Memorial.
