London’s terror heroes honoured

London’s heroes are being honoured for their work and bravery in the aftermath of last year’s July bombings at a Buckingham Palace ceremony.
Afterwards, they will be joined by more than 500 London Underground, emergency services staff, firefighters, police and ambulance crews who remain dedicated to emergency response in all situations.
And in a separate ceremony, a record number of Police officers are to be honoured for their work during the Asian Tsunami and the July 7th attacks.
More than 200 officers will be presented with Commissioner’s commendations - the highest award for bravery.
Most of those will go to those who worked in London on the day of the terror strikes.
The commendations recognise a “high degree of bravery” above and beyond that normally expected, but today almost half will receive the Met’s highest award for courage.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has sent a letter to be read out to acknowledge the outstanding work of the recipients.
“The police service showed extraordinary courage and dedication in undertaking the harrowing rescue and recovery work following the tsunami and the bomb attacks in central London,” he said.
“It is fitting that their courage and dedication is acknowledged today with the award of the Commissioner’s Commendations.
“We have great expectations of our police service, and are immensely grateful to those who risk - and sometimes lose - their lives so the rest of us can live in peace and safety.”
