Young Boy’s Heart Miracle
Published: February 14, 2006
A five-year-old California boy waiting for a heart transplant spent 234 days using an external pump, longer than any other child in North America.
During the eight-month ordeal, Jason Zhao suffered two strokes and three brain hemorrhages. His father says that last month the boy was removed from the donation waiting list and diagnosed with three weeks to live after suffering a stroke.
Now he’s smiling again, his father says.
The younger Zhao was forced onto the mechanical pump, known as the Berlin Heart, last June, when his abnormally swollen heart suddenly stopped beating.
Doctors from Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto had to seek permission from the Food and Drug Administration to place Jason on the device because it is not approved for routine use.
