Sorry: Stolen laptops returned to school
Published: February 9, 2006
Usually a story about teenagers stealing doesn’t have a positive ending, but 80 kids in a local after school-program are smiling again thanks to a confession and a change of heart.
Children go to the Super-Kids Club in Bonita Springs to sing, play and learn.
“I come here to do my homework,” said Norma Gomez.
They like using the laptops loaded with educational software. It’s their favorite way to learn.
“It really helps children with building vocabulary, reading composition, language usage,” said Ellen Nichols, founder of Super-Kids Club.
For the past month, the kids haven’t gotten that hi-tech help.
“The computers got lost,” said Gomez.
The computers were actually stolen.
Nichols couldn’t believe it when she went to the center one Saturday in January.
“I opened the door and saw our back door, sunlight coming through the back door, and I realized it was off its hinges,” said Nichols.
The thieves went into the vault where the computers were kept but couldn’t get into it because of the deadbolt. So they pulled the door off its hinges and took all 19 computers inside.
If Nichols was shocked to find the computers stolen, she was even more shocked this weekend.
“Two people walked in, two women, and sat with me and said our sons stole the computers and we are so sorry,” said Nichols.
She was surprised with what they said next.
“We have had our children tell us who they sold them to and we have gone and bought the computers back with our sons and we have them to give to you,” said Nichols.
All of the computers were returned to the day care.
Nichols says the theft was actually a blessing in disguise. She purchased new computers for the kids after theirs were stolen. Now she’ll use those new computers to start a new Super-Kids Club in Southwest Florida.
