Justice for Janet: 27-year-old murder mystery solved
Published: February 9, 2006
A 66-year-old Three Oaks man is now charged with the murder of a 23-year-old Hope College student.
Robert Lynch was arrested Tuesday for the 1979 murder of Janet Chandler.
Chandler was a student at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She disappeared one night while working at a motel.
Police say Lynch was staying at that hotel back in 1979, and now, this cold case has apparently been solved.
One day ago, a Berrien County man was arrested for a murder that happened some 27-years ago.
All indications are Robert Lynch was living a pretty quiet life here in Michiana.
Justice for Janet
Records show that 66-year-old Robert Lynch and his wife have owned a home in Three Oaks, Michigan since the early 1980’s, perhaps longer.
One local merchant says he has known Lynch as a customer, for about 20-years and that Lynch last visited last week.
However, it’s what Lynch allegedly did 27-years ago that has suddenly landed him in jail.
“At the time of Chandler’s murder, Mr. Lynch was employed as a security guard on assignment, policing a local labor strike,” says Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.
In 1979, Lynch was living in a Holland hotel when the overnight clerk disappeared.
The unclothed body of 23-year-old Janet Chandler was found in the snow the next day. The task of finding her alleged killer, continued for 27-years.
Hope College Professor, Dr. David Schock, did his part to keep the drive for justice alive, by producing a 2004 documentary entitled, “Who Killed Janet Chandler”.
He said in response to the capture Lynch, “My reaction to Roger Van Leer was you have done well, congratulations, well done, that’s my reactions. Justice for Janet doesn’t get any better than that.”
