Girl Gets First Haircut for Locks of Love

Published: February 9, 2006

Ever want to do something special to make a difference in someone’s life? One young woman is doing just that, making a sacrifice so sick children can feel and look better.

Kaitlyn Herrington, 11, experienced a first in her young life as her mom and sister watched. Kaitlyn had never had a hair cut. With her hair more than 40 inches long, Kaitlyn called for a change. Not so much for her, but for someone else.

“I’d like to do it for Locks of Love because I know they need wigs for their hair,” she said.

Locks of Love provides hair pieces to boys and girls who’ve lost their hair because of cancer and other diseases. “Actually I’m shaking a little bit, and I’m a little bit nervous, but I think I’m going to be okay,” Kaitlyn said before her haircut.

Andrea Herrington, Kaitlyn’s mom, told us she was probably more anxious than her daughter. “She’s my baby. We’ve talked and prayed about this. This is her decision. I’m thrilled we’re here today.”

After a quick shampoo of nearly four feet of hair and more than 15 minutes under two high-power blow driers, Kaitlyn got closer to the big cut.

“I’m just very happy she’s going to be able to help out some other children who aren’t as fortunate as Kaitlyn,” said Andrea.

The idea to donate her hair came to Kaitlyn three years ago, after her grandmother beat breast cancer. Kaitlyn knows losing her hair means gaining so much. Eleven years in the making, now 22 inches of hair for Locks of Love.

As her new style came together after two hours of work, there was a smile, the satisfaction knowing what cancer took away from one child, Kaitlyn gives back.
