Police make dramatic rescue of woman being attacked

Published: February 8, 2006

A Syracuse man faces assault charges after he was arrested by police officers who broke through the window of an apartment where he was allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend with a knife.
Authorities say officers responding to a report of a woman being attacked yesterday afternoon were prevented from entering the woman’s home because Terrance Stewart had barricaded the doors.

Police officials say officers used a ladder and a sledgehammer to get through a window. Once inside, they found the 22-year-old Stewart holding a knife on the woman, who had suffered slash wounds to her head, face, throat, arms and legs.

Stewart dropped the knife when confronted by officers with their guns drawn.

The woman was taken to a Syracuse hospital. Police say her injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

Stewart — who has had three dozen previous arrests — has been charged with assault, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon. He’s being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center jail.
