Police Call Diver’s Survival A Miracle

Published: February 8, 2006

The police say rescued diver Robert Hewitt survived by eating kina and crayfish during his 72-hour ordeal at sea.

Mr Hewitt failed to surface from a dive last Sunday off Mana Island, near Wellington.

Inspector John Spence from Kapiti-Mana Police says Mr Hewitt had caught the seafood prior to getting in trouble, and ate it while he was at sea.

Mr Hewitt was found off the northeast tip of Mana Island at 4pm, near where he was last seen.

Inspector Spence says surviving the three-day ordeal was miraculous, and especially today, which was very cold, windy and choppy.

He says being present when Mr Hewitt arrived on shore is something he will not forget for a very long time.

Inspector Spence says there will be a de-brief in a couple of days to find out exactly what happened, and he hopes Mr Hewitt will attend.

In the meantime Mr Hewitt has been taken to hospital for treatment for hypothermia.

He spoke to his partner by phone shortly after he was rescued.
