Man rescued after three days adrift

Published: February 7, 2006

A BRITISH man has been rescued after three days adrift at sea in a yacht.

Tony Walsh, 64, and three Filipinos were saved by the Philippine coastguard.

Coastguard officials identified the Briton. However, they have not been able to say where in the UK he is from.

The yacht, the M/L Passat, had left the beach resort of Puerto Galera on Mindoro island, south west of Manila, on Saturday afternoon for a nearby dive site.

However, it is understood that it developed engine trouble shortly after casting off.

Coastguard spokesman Commander Joseph Coyme said rescue efforts had been hampered by haze and rough seas.

But yesterday a coastguard rescue ship reached the distressed yacht and started towing it to a port on Lubang Island, about 150 miles north-west of Manila, said Petty Officer First Class Tomas Langido.

Walsh was accompanied by two Filipinos, but they were joined later by a fisherman aboard a boat as their yacht drifted in the high seas, said Lieutenant First Grade Zenmond Duque.

Lt Duque said Mr Walsh and three others were unharmed, with the Briton steering the yacht while it was being towed. None of the men required medical treatment.
