Neighbor rescues home’s occupants
Published: February 5, 2006
Dennis Williams saw the smoke coming from his neighbor’s home and knew he had to act quickly.
He knew that one of the women living in the house had a medical condition and wasn’t very mobile. That’s when he told his wife to call 911 and he dashed across the street to help his neighbors out of their home.
“Luckily I was able to go in through the front door and out of the front door and the fire wasn’t inside the house yet,” Williams said. “There wasn’t any smoke in the main house at that time, and both Mary and Emma Hunzecker were sitting in the living room.”
Williams said that he and his wife moved into the neighborhood in 1998 shortly after the neighborhood was built. He said that he’s known the Hunzeckers ever since then.
Genny Halterman said that when Williams ran into the house it was scary.
“It was scary and at the same time very heroic,” said Halterman.
The Hunzecker residence in the 10000 block of Bland Ridge Court was nearly completely destroyed by the fire which started somewhere in the garage there Friday afternoon.
“My daughter and I were sitting here facing the garage and she was getting ready to take me home when I saw a little flame in the garage,” said Anthony Santago.
Williams said that Mary Hunzecker, Emma’s daughter, knew that the fire was in the garage and was trying to get Emma out of the house.
“I helped to get Emma a robe on and then helped her out of the house,” Williams said. “Mary came out behind me and brought their dog and their cat.”
Williams said that within a few minutes of emerging from the home, the blaze was out of control.
Prince George Fire Company 1 and Company 3, along with Substation 3 and Petersburg Fire Engines 4 and 5, worked for more than an hour to bring the blaze under control.
“By the time they got here it was too late,” said Santago.
Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze and did not have a preliminary damage estimate.
