Woman rescued from sinking car

Published: February 4, 2006

Authorities are crediting three men with rescuing a woman this morning from a car that skidded off a road and into a retention pond near the southwest suburb of Orland Park.

The woman, whose age and name fire officials did not know, was taken in fair condition to Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet.

About 7:30 a.m., the men saw a white car weaving on the slippery stretch of the 16500 block of Will Cook Road before going off the highway and plunging into the 4-foot-deep pond, which was about 300 feet off the road, said Orland Fire Protection District Battalion Chief William Bonnar.

One of the men grabbed a hammer from his truck, and the three ran to the pond. The rescuers jumped in and waded through the murky, frigid water to the car. By this time, only four inches of the vehicle’s roof were showing, Bonnar said.

The men smashed one of its windows and pulled out the woman.

“They saved this woman’s life,” Orland Fire Chief Don Bettenhausen said in a news release. “We’re grateful that they took the initiative to get involved and help.”

Fire officials identified the three men as George Cavelle of Orland Park, Dan O’Halloran of Homer Glen, and Bill Duggan, of Lockport, who is a part-time Orland Park police officer.

All three men were checked by paramedics after the incident and released without injury.

No other passengers were found in the car, which was towed from the pond, officials said.
