Lost dog reunited with owner
Published: February 4, 2006
Roughly 43 miles is a long distance for a dog to travel, but the lost Shih Tzu, known as LJ, made it home Thursday afternoon.
Two-year-old LJ belongs to Debbie Beamer of South Seventh Street. He went missing Jan. 25, and after combing her neighborhood, she thought someone had stolen him.
It turned out a carpet installer from Wooster found the dog while having lunch at the Cedar Street Inn and decided to take him home after being unable to find the owner.
Bill Kirker took LJ back to his Wooster home and named him Toby. He became aware that someone was looking for LJ through his friend, Terry Lillibridge of Coshocton, when Kirker told him about his new dog.
“He said he found his new dog in Coshocton,” Lillibridge said. “It looked cold so he took it with him.”
Lillibridge, however, thought the dog reminded him of a lost-and-found advertisement he read in the Tribune’s classified section. His suspicions were confirmed when he read the story about LJ and saw the photo in Wednesday’s paper.
“He yelled ‘LJ’ at the dog and he started jumping around and barking,” Lillibridge said. “He knew then he was taking him home.”
Beamer was thrilled when Lillibridge called to tell her his friend had LJ.
“I wore the carpet out talking to him,” she said. “I had to use the cordless phone so I could walk back and forth.”
LJ bites and Beamer also believes he has seizures. She was extremely concerned that other people might not have the patience with him that she does.
“He hasn’t bitten them, but he does growl every time they try to pick him up,” she said.
After Beamer got the news she called her family to share her excitement.
“Everybody looked for him,” she said. “I’m glad I’m getting him back.”
Beamer offered $100 or one of her Shih Tzu puppies for the return of LJ.
Kirker wasn’t able to bring the dog back himself due to illness, but he made sure he found someone who could. The substitute, however, made no mention of the reward.
“Bill wasn’t worried about the money,” Lillibridge said.
Beamer is looking into options such as putting up a baby gate to make sure LJ doesn’t slip out again. She also is going to make sure she puts his tags on his collar.
