Hero bus driver foils two armed robbers

Published: February 3, 2006

A HEROIC bus driver has foiled an armed robbery after bravely confronting two gunmen.

Risking his life, Nick Barden slammed on the brakes of his bus and jumped out to tackle one of the robbers who was grappling with a security guard in the street.

Seeing the 35-year-old bearing down on them, the two masked criminals instantly fled - without stealing a penny.

Father-of-four Mr Barden was driving his 434 Metrobus along Chipstead Road, Coulsdon, when he saw the gunmen attempting to rob a Securicor van outside the HSBC bank.

He said: “It all happened so quickly.

“I followed my instincts and my first reaction was to pull the handbrake and get out of the bus to help the security guard.

“As soon as I stopped the bus in the middle of the road both the armed robbers turned and looked at me and panicked.”

As Mr Barden ran to help the security guard, the robbers bolted, heading down an alleyway to where a getaway car was parked.

“It was too late to catch the robbers but I helped the security van driver who was very shaken by the ordeal.

Police are looking for two black men in connection with the crime who were wearing dark clothes and either balaclavas or scarves over their faces.
