Dolphin returned to sea

Published: January 31, 2006

Continuing our recent obsession with mammals, Marra the dolphin reaches celebrity status on the front of the Times and the Telegraph.

Remember our bottlenosed whale friend who swam down the Thames a few weeks ago, but sadly didn’t make it? Well, this dolphin is a bottlenosed too!

And she has a NAME!

Marra had been living it up at Maryport on the Cumbrian coast for almost a month, reports the Times, but marine experts decided to ‘rescue’ her after becoming concerned for her welfare.

“Its skin appeared bleached and in danger of ulceration through a lack of salt in the water and it had begun to exhibit “stereotypical behaviour”, swimming up and down the harbour walls in the manner of older zoo animals. It was also losing weight.”

Hmm, we’re not sure why ‘experts’ waited three weeks to help the poor thing, especially as when it was transported to the open sea, it quickly found a mate.

“It was last seen heading out to deep water. We were not expecting the other dolphin at all. To meet up so quickly is quite remarkable,” said Tony Woodley from British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Ah, we’re welling up.

Meanwhile, the Independent tells us about “The world according to George W Bush”, as the President prepares to give his State of the Union address.

Isn’t it about time we put him out to sea as well?
