100 fishermen rescued from drifting ice

About 100 fishermen have been rescued from drifting ice after it broke away from the coast of Sakhalin in the Russian Far East but many more remain stranded, a spokesman for local rescuers said Monday.
The representative of the local Emergency Situations Ministry’s department said an ice floe with 300 to 500 fishermen was 1.5 km (0.9 miles) away from the northeastern coast of the island.
Rescuers are using two Emergency Situations Ministry helicopters and boats, as well as vessels supplied by local residents, to pick up the fishermen from the drifting ice.
Ice fishing is a favorite pastime in the Russian winter. In popular spots, hundreds of people can be seen huddling over a recently drilled hole in the ice on rivers or further out to sea despite sub-zero temperatures. However, the Emergency Situations Ministry has warned fishermen in the past month that it is still dangerous to fish on sea ice due to the threat of drifting.
