RV angel’s donation gives vet, roommates a home after fire

Published: January 29, 2006

A disabled veteran whose mobile home was destroyed Thursday night by fire may soon have a replacement.

On Friday, Charles Duncan learned that a good Samaritan plans to donate a used mobile home to him and the three others who live with him, replacing the one that was destroyed.

“That’s just wonderful,” he said Friday. “We lost everything we had in the fire. There’s no way to replace what we lost, but at least that will help us.”

Duncan’s 20-foot-long recreational vehicle caught fire shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday as Duncan was leaving the shopping plaza at Sunrise Way and Ramon Road.

“We’d just left Ralphs and turned left onto Sunrise when the engine died,” he said. “We got out to see what was wrong, but before we had a chance to do anything, the whole underneath (of the RV) caught fire.”

Duncan and one of his roommates could only watch as the vehicle they had called home for the past three months went up in flames. Their two other roommates had gone to have dinner.

The fire destroyed all of their belongings, Duncan said.

“The firefighters said it was caused by something electrical,” Duncan said, adding that he had bought the mobile home last year with a portion of a disability allotment he was awarded by Social Security.

The donor, who did not want to be identified, said Friday that her RV is in working order and is about 22 feet long. Hearing about the story in the media made her realize that the RV she has might be useful to them.

“I just thought, how devastating,” she said Friday. “I hope they’ll be able to use it.”
