Diaper drive to benefit quintuplets’ family

Published: January 29, 2006

The cousin of a Shepherd woman expecting to give birth to quintuplets next week is conducting a diaper drive at her hair salon here.

J.P. Mitchell Hair Etc., 2901 Ashman, across from Kroger, is accepting diapers and gift cards for Rex R. and Malessa A. Wing.

“This is nice to do something for a good cause instead of a catastrophe,” said Jolene P. Mitchell, 37, of Midland.

Mitchell is a cousin of Malessa Wing, a 35-year-old woman awaiting the arrival of quintuplets at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Wing is in her 29th week of pregnancy and is having more contractions daily, said her mother, Patty A. Parker, 58, of Mount Pleasant.

“Each day is getting a little bit harder for her,” she said. “She has carried these babies longer than others expected.”

Wing’s doctor, Dr. Steven M. Roth, had wanted her to make it past the 28-week mark of gestation, a key milestone in high-risk pregnancies.

Wing wanted to wait until the 32nd week, Parker said.

“So they met halfway,” she said.

Mitchell plans to store the diaper supply for the Wings, whose three-bedroom house in Isabella County’s Coe Township soon will house double the number of occupants.
