Barbados herb can cure world’s leading illnesses
Published: January 29, 2006
Research has begun in Barbados to support evidence that components in local herbs can cure some of the world’s leading illnesses.
The initiative is spearheaded by a tutor and her students at the Barbados Community College.
We have all seen our grandparents and parents using them and maybe repulsed at the unpleasant smell or taste of cerasee bush or soursop leaves.
It has probably crossed our minds as to why these old folk use herbs to cure everything from headaches to the common cold, some even going as far as to use them to help with diabetes and high blood pressure.
Research indicates there maybe greater value in herbs than in main stream medicines.
Dr. Sonia Peters and her students at the Barbados Community College say the have found herbs locally, which could cure not just these ailments but also cancer.
But she says knowledge about them is lacking especially among the youth.
Dr. Peters who has attended conferences regionally and internationally with regards to the research, said many people are afraid to use herb remedies because they don’t know how much to use or what side effects to expect.
These fears are the basis for the research of which the results need to be documented.
She adds that it is important that the research be done locally, because if something significant is found we will be the first to know. And Barbadians can reap the subsequent benefits and not an outsider who may keep that information for themselves.
Dr. Peters and her students are conserving a very important part of Barbados’ heritage, where who knows …someday the plant which could be the cure of all illnesses maybe unearthed, all she hopes is that the research does not go unnoticed.
