Family rescued from burning home

Published: January 21, 2006

Firefighters in Boyne City rescued a family early today, Friday, after a fire broke out trapping them on the second floor of their home.

Boyne City Fire Chief Dennis Amesbury said firefighters from his department were called to the home of David and Becky Theibert at 124 North Park St. at about 1:52 a.m. when dispatchers at 9-1-1 received a cell phone call reporting that the house was on fire and the family was still inside.

Amesbury said when firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later, they found the family had escaped to a second floor outside deck. While Amesbury had not confirmed all his information before press time today, he thought that the family consisted of four people but that only three - two adults and a child - were at home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters used extension ladders to get the family down to safety. None of the occupants were injured.

The chief said it took firefighters more than an hour to get the fire under control. He said the flames were difficult to track down in the walls in the attic of the home.

Amesbury said the fire apparently started in the walls or attic near the top of the stairway, which is what prevented the family from escaping on their own. The fire caused extensive damage to the second floor and water and smoke damage to the first floor.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 6:40 a.m. today. Fire officials were planning to return to the home later in the day in an effort to determine what started the fire.

Amesbury noted that the American Red Cross has been contacted and is already providing assistance to the family, who had been renting the home.
