11-year-old’s Locks of Love donation inspires others
Published: January 21, 2006
Lindsay Clifton gave of herself Friday. Sixteen inches of the 11-year-old Kinston girl’s hair was cut off and donated to the Locks of Love organization, where it will be used to make hairpieces for children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
“It feels so much lighter,” Clifton said after stylist Amy Hill of Bellissima Salon took the scissors to her long, brown ponytail.
Clifton’s mother, Kim, said it was her daughter’s idea to donate her hair. She was watching television one afternoon and found out about Locks of Love.
“My daughter is not selfish at all,” she said.
This is the second time Clifton has donated her hair to Locks of Love. The last time was in July 2003. Locks of Love told her that her hair was used to make three different wigs.
“I feel pretty good that I am able to help out other children in need,” she said.
According to the Locks of Love Web site, the majority of all the hair donated is from children who want to help other children.
Clifton said her decision to donate was also greatly appreciated by her fourth grade teacher, who underwent chemotherapy for cancer treatment and lost her hair.
“Last time when I went back to school after my haircut, all the kids looked at me like I was crazy,” she said. “They will probably do the same.”
Clifton said she is trying to get some of her other friends with long hair to donate to Locks of Love, but that is still a work in progress.
“I think it is absolutely wonderful that she does this,” said Clifton’s grandmother, Elaine Broadwell. “I’m glad she’s encouraging others to do the same thing.”
Clifton likes both long and short hair.
“On hot summer days, short hair doesn’t get on your back,” she said. “But long hair is nice when there is a breeze because it’s like a fan.”
