Angel Flight coordinated record 3,600 free flights

Published: January 20, 2006

Angel Flight Southeast had a record year in 2005, coordinating 3,617 free flights, 37 percent more than the 2,635 flights coordinated in 2004.

The Leesburg-based 24-year-old nonprofit organization of more than 1,000 volunteer pilots says most of those flights were in response to the devastation Hurricane Katrina wrought throughout much of its five-state network.

Following Katrina’s landfall, Angel Flight participated as a member of the Homeland Security Emergency Air Transportation System, or HSEATS, coordinating 646 flights solely to assist government and private emergency service personnel and evacuees in the storms’ aftermath, according to President Deborah Deal.

The other increases in flights involved Angel Flight’s ongoing assistance services, including additional flights for children with rare or unusual medical conditions who need treatment in faraway locations, flights for organ recipients and for a variety of other humanitarian purposes.
