Runners raised more six (m) million dollars for charities during this year’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Arizona marathon and half marathon.
With nearly 34-thousand participants, charitable groups were the big winner yesterday. Organizers say it was the largest group ever to participate in a combination marathon.
Teams held local events to raise money. Team in Training, which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, raised 4-point-6 (m) million dollars alone.
Robert Herron, a 53-year-old Scot from Glasgow, promised he’d don what he calls “the Scottish equivalent of the tuxedo” if he raised three thousand dollars for the Wellness Community. That’s a Washington-based nonprofit that helps cancer victims.
Wearing the same kilt he wore on his wedding day, Herron crossed the half marathon finish line with a time of two minutes 55 seconds.
