Pirate-theme fun for sick children

Published: January 17, 2006

A GROUP of Bahraini children suffering from blood diseases will be treated to a pirate-theme fun day at the Bahrain Yacht Club next week. The 50 children, aged seven years upwards, will take part in a variety of activities on January 22 under the theme Pirates Day Out.

Some of the activities include fancy dress, dolphin watching, introduction to sailing, beach games, magic show and music by DJ Krazy Kevin.

The initiative is being organised in co-operation with the club by British Airways Dreamflight and the Royal Society of St George to offer the children an opportunity to take part in recreational activities.

The children attending the fun day are among the 300 patients being treated for blood diseases at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.

They all have the inherited blood diseases Thalassemia or sickle cell anaemia.

Volunteer Eibhlin Crosse, who is the liaison between the society and Dreamflight, praised the club’s support for organising the fun day and providing a free lunch.

She said the children deserved a recreational day as they missed many opportunities due to their time in the hospital, some requiring daily medication.

Club water sports manager Daniel Chamberlain said he looked forward to the fun day with the children.

“This is the yacht club’s chance to give something back to the community,” he said.

Dreamflight is a registered UK charity, which sends seriously ill children on their holiday of a lifetime.

The organisation has sent 190 children each year, mostly of British origin, but some from Hong Kong, Chernobyl and two from Bahrain, to theme parks in Florida, US.

Many children cannot be selected for various reasons, such as the demanding nature of their illnesses.

Royal Society of St George chairman Jonty Crosse said the society have raised money for Dreamflight trips before, but want to give other children an opportunity at the fun day.

“Some of them have never been out on the water, let alone seen dolphins,” he said.
