Car slams into pram: 1 yo survives, protected by pram
Published: January 17, 2006
When mum Nicola French saw her baby’s pram crushed under the wheels of a car, she thougt the worst.
It was every parent’s worst nightmare - she’d been knocked unconscious and her other child had been thrown from her toy scooter.
Baby Bobbie was trapped in his mangled pram under a white Ford Escort after it had veered onto the pavement, slamming into him, his mum and four-year-old sister.
The tot was pulled out from under the vehicle while his hysterical mother Nicola, 33, looked on - miraculously Bobbie unharmed.
Now Nicola, Bobbie and little Mollie, who was riding a scooter, are recovering together at home and thanking their lucky stars.
Freak accident
Full-time mum, Nicola, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, reckons her expensive pram - an aptly named Herqules - saved Bobbie.
Nicola was walking home from her mother’s house in the town, when the family were hit by the car.
She said: “We had already crossed the road and had walked behind a stationary red car. We got back onto the pavement and I just remember being hit from behind.
“Someone said they saw my head hit the windscreen and I landed on the road so I must have been thrown a few yards. I was pushing the pram and the first thing I recall after waking up was seeing the pram squashed under the car.
“A woman helped drag the buggy out from underneath. Bobbie was still in the pram. He had been asleep so he was laid down and strapped in and because it was raining I had the cover down.
“I think it was because he was so compacted into the pram that he was saved. I’m glad we spent the extra money on the pram because it is so tough. I can say now if he had been in a little buggy he wouldn’t be here right now.
“Mollie was riding her scooter and she was hit too but she has been so brave. She never cried once not even at the hospital. You think if they can be so strong, you can be too.”
The driver was interviewed by police at the scene and a replacement pram has been donated by Lullabys Nursery.
