9 yo Girl rescued after 50ft fall to river edge

Published: January 17, 2006

A 9-year-old girl plunged 50 feet from a secluded walking path at White River State Park on Monday, but tree branches and thick brush may have cushioned the impact.

Brianna Slick, Greenwood, was among a group of two adults and three other children returning from an outing at the Indianapolis Zoo. The group was walking along the River Promenade when the accident happened around 4:30 p.m., police said.

The group was on the narrow, half-mile-long walking trail that runs north from the Washington Street Bridge. The path is lined on both sides by more than 1,200 large blocks of limestone, and Brianna was walking on top of the large rocks that front the river when she slipped, fire officials said.

Brianna told rescuers she stepped on a stick, lost her balance and fell 50 feet through tree branches to the brush on the river’s edge, said Indiana Capitol Police Officers Joe Gibson and Ken Anderson, the first authorities on the scene.

“When she hit the ground, she screamed up to us, and we called police,” said Myrna Hardwick, a friend of Brianna’s mother, who was leading the outing.

Brianna was alert and conscious when rescuers arrived. She was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in good condition, said Indianapolis Fire Capt. Gregg Harris.

“She had cuts from branches under her chin, and she said she flipped over before landing on her head,” Gibson said.
