Police Dog Florida Bound To Accept Award
Published: January 15, 2006
A Des Moines police dog will appear on national television to receive an “Excellence in Law Enforcement” award on Sunday night.
Reno is the dog that saved two officer’s lives back in January 2005.
Police said Reno chased Michael Reyna, who was high on methamphetamine, into the woods. Police said Reyna shot Reno and then he was hit again in the crossfire with police.
The dog lost a lot of blood, and officers didn’t expect him to recover, but he did.
Reno boarded a plane Friday morning to Florida to accept his award.
The dog rode in the cabin with his handler, Officer Tim Nading.
Delta’s ComAir made a special exception for Reno. Normally they only allow non-violent service dogs in the cabin.
Other passengers on the flight were initially concerned that Reno was there but, when they found out who he is and why he was on board, their concern turned to excitement.
“Something gets out of hand, he could take care of it. Because I’m not strong enough to take on a huge guy, but he could take care of it,” said Sam Hambrecht, a passenger on the flight.
Reno’s award show will air at 7 p.m. Sunday on Animal Planet.
Reyna’s trial is set for Feb. 1. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder, and one charge of injuring a police service dog.
