Dog Reunited with Family After Katrina

Published: January 15, 2006

“Junior” Sheal hasn’t been called “Junior” in a long time. The pup from St. Bernard, Louisiana was separated from his owners by Hurricane Katrina. Since then, he had been living with a family in Northwest.

They called him “Cajun.”

“We left the Saturday before the storm came,” said Junior’s owner Janis Sheal “It was me and my husband, three kids. My dad stayed behind to take care of the dogs. He was forced out on the Saturday after the storm. And he had to leave the dogs behind.”

Like thousands of other families devastated, the Sheals lost everything in the storm, including all five of their dogs. They say it’s like they’ve been missing family members.

“You know, they’re my kids’ dogs,” Sheal said. “That’s their hearts right there.”

Junior was reunited with the Sheals Saturday. Right away he jumped up on Destiny, the youngest of the Sheals, licking her face and waging his tale.

“(Despite) everything that they’ve been through, when they come back, they know it’s home,” Janis Sheal said.

Junior was tracked down through the Washington-based group Pet Connect Inc.

So far, the Sheals have found four of their five dogs.
