Girl rescued from traffickers
Published: January 12, 2006
China’s police have rescued Dang Thi May, a Vietnamese girl who was sold to China by human traffickers, according to the Viet Nam Embassy in Beijing, China yesterday.
Before she was rescued by Chinese police, May sent a letter to the website Sina.com calling for a release that stirred Chinese and Vietnamese public opinion in recent days.
Compelled by her letter, the Viet Nam Embassy in China continued to contact police in Fujian Province in an effort to save her.
On January 7, police successfully rescued May from a district in Fujian Province. The Viet Nam Embassy is completing necessary formalities to bring her back home before Tet (lunar new year).
The embassy has instructed Vietnamese employees and staff in China to collect similar information in order to help prevent further trafficking of women.
May was sold to Fujian Province at the end 2005 and endured countless horrors while captive.
On December 27, she managed to contact a Chinese youth who sent her image and letter to Sina.com, thus helping rescue her.
