Dozen workers trapped in tower elevator rescued
Published: January 12, 2006
Twelve workers who were trapped in a stalled elevator inside the Tower of the Americas were rescued Wednesday evening.
The elevator stopped working after power was cut off, apparently because insulation was being sprayed inside, San Antonio Councilman Rogers Flores told WOAI.
Firefighters rescued the 12 within 45 minutes of getting a call about the stalled elevator.
The tower has dominated San Antonio’s skyline since 1968 and has one of the city’s tallest elevator shafts. It’s being remodeled to hold a Landry’s restaurant.
It was the second time in a month that the elevator stopped, trapping people inside the tower. Four construction workers were stuck inside the elevator for more than 11 hours last month. The men were working for a firm that’s renovating the famed structure.
Following an estimated $11 million in renovations, Landry’s Restaurants plans to reopen the restaurant at the top of the tower as Eyes Over Texas at the Tower of the Americas. The upscale restaurant will serve regional and continental dishes.
The aging structure offering panoramic views of the city also needs structural improvements.
