79 people rescued off Sydney beaches

Published: January 8, 2006

Seventy-nine people were rescued off Sydney’s beaches today, as warm weather and rough seas kept surf lifesavers on their toes.

Surf Lifesaving spokesman Stephen Leahy said most people rescued were young children, teenagers or inexperienced swimmers caught in strong currents or rips.

“Surf conditions were quite dangerous today and rough seas forced the closure of a number of Sydney beaches such as Bronte and Tamarama,” he said.

“Beaches were struck with strong currents and rips and it wasn’t an easy day for lifesavers.”

More than 3800 beachgoers were also warned about swimming in rips or not paying attention to beach flags.

“All the rescues occurred outside the red and yellow flags,” Mr Leahy said.

“Rescues were done by surf lifesavers on rubber duckies, jet-skis or offshore boats.”

Twenty-two people were rescued yesterday, bringing the weekend total to 101.
