After a high speed chase, police recovered a toddler who was taken during a carjacking Thursday.
The 18-month-old boy was found in good health, police said.
The man who allegedly carjacked the vehicle was identified as George William Taylor III, 37. Taylor faces charges of kidnapping, auto theft and eluding the police, police said.
The boy was left strapped in his car seat in a Nissan Altima at a gas station in Jacksonville around noon on Thursday, when his father’s 18-year-old girlfriend went into the gas station to buy a drink. She left the car running and the perpetrator got behind the wheel and drove away, police said.
An off-duty deputy who saw the event unfold followed the vehicle but lost it. Police then spotted the car again and pursued the driver, who crashed the car.
Taylor’s police record goes back to 1999 and includes other arrests for auto theft and weapons violations, traffic violations and DUI, authorities said.
