Door smashing heroic rescue
Published: January 6, 2006
A HERO mechanic smashed down a door to rescue an 88-year-old woman from a fire this morning.
Kenny Almond, 35, from Leighton Drive, Walney, saw smoke coming from windows in Exmouth Street, Barrow, at 8.30am.
He broke down the door and helped the pensioner to safety.
Barrow Fire and Rescue Service believe the woman, who has not been named, fell asleep smoking. Firefighters say a discarded cigarette set her chair on fire.
Watch manager Mike Jones said: “A gentleman broke down the door to get her out. The civilian was a passer-by.
“The lady was very lucky to wake up and she was very lucky that the chap was within the vicinity of her flat.”
Mr Jones said: “The message to other people is be aware of the dangers of smoking when tired.”
The rescued pensioner was being comforted by family at a neighbour’s home this morning.
An ambulance was called and the woman was treated for shock at the scene.
