Girl gives ‘Locks of Love’

Published: January 5, 2006

Eight-year-old Renee Brody gave a truly personal gift this holiday season when she donated 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. The Abbot School third-grader got her hair cut at Silhouette Hair Designers in Westford last week.

“It is a really big gift for her to be giving because she loves her hair. She has been growing it for a long time and she is very attached to it and she is recognized by it,” said Renee’s mother, Kim Scott.

“We have been talking about it for a long time and I explained to her that there are a lot of people, a lot of children, with cancer who lose their hair,” Scott said.

Scott said she was inspired by a neighbor who donated hair a few years ago. She said few people have 10 inches of hair to donate, but that Renne, whose hair was nearly long enough for her to sit on, was a perfect candidate. Even with 10 inches cut off, Renee’s dark brown hair still reaches past her shoulders.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1997, that provides prosthetic hairpieces to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss, usually due to alopecia areata, a medical condition with no known cause or cure.

Locks of Love also donates hair pieces to children who have lost their hair due to cancer chemotherapy treatment. Locks of Love receives more than 2,000 hair donations through the mail each week.

According to Locks of Love, “the prostheses we provide help to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling [the children] to face the world and their peers.”
