Disabled center gets boost from Super Bowl charity

A center for people with developmental disabilities is getting a makeover from a charity linked to the Super Bowl.
The ceiling repairs and other fix-up work at the Cass Avenue Activity Center in Detroit will take place next week through the Detroit affiliate of the Washington-based group Rebuilding Together. The group overhauls a building each year in the Super Bowl host city.
The 40th Super Bowl is Feb. 5 at Ford Field.
About 200 volunteers will paint, make repairs and install fixtures, tiles, kitchen appliances and a security system, said Jay Eldridge, president of Rebuilding Together’s Oakland County affiliate
The activity center operates under Cass Community Social Services and serves about 70 adults with mental or physical disabilities.
“This obviously is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Faith Fowler, executive director of Cass Community Social Services, told the Detroit Free Press. “It’ll create a much more functional space and be safer, brighter, cleaner and more inviting for both the consumers and the staff members.”
