Girl rescued from kidnap car crash

Published: January 4, 2006

A three-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital after being kidnapped from her home and injured in a subsequent car crash, police said.

The child was abducted from her home in the Rumney area of Cardiff on Monday evening, before the car she was travelling in crashed following a police pursuit.

A man was arrested by Wiltshire Police just after 1am on Tuesday when a car left the road more than 80 miles away on the A4 between Marlborough and Hungerford. Wiltshire police said officers began following a Ford Escort after it was spotted jumping a red light with the lights turned off.

Following the incident, the three-year-old was reunited with her family in hospital in Swindon, where she was being treated for minor injuries according to police.

Chief Inspector Charlie Dibble of Wiltshire Police said: “Our attention was drawn to a grey Ford Escort travelling with no headlights from Blagrove near junction 16 of the M4 shortly after 1am.

“The vehicle passed through a red traffic light and did not stop. Officers followed the vehicle eastbound along the M4, then off at junction 15 heading south. Midway between Marlborough and Hungerford on the A4, the driver of the Escort lost control of the vehicle which then crashed.

“The male was arrested by traffic officers and the child was taken by the police helicopter to Great Western Hospital in Swindon for medical examination.

“It is reassuring to know that this incident has been resolved with the return of this little girl to her parents. Unfortunately the child suffered minor injuries after the vehicle left the road. Her family are currently with her in hospital.

“The male arrested was taken into custody at Swindon, on suspicion of kidnap, driving with excess alcohol and other motoring offences. He has now been handed over to South Wales Police, as the substantive offences took place there.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said the 26-year-old was being questioned by officers, adding: “Another man has also been arrested in connection with the same incident and is currently in custody in South Wales.”
