Thirteen-year-old Jon Tappe became attached to Sandy, a border collie/husky mix, at the animal shelter where she ended up after the truck hit her in August. The bond between boy and dog occurred before her performance in Grandstreet Theatre’s production of “Annie” last month.
Jon said Sandy “just caught my eye” when he went to the shelter in October to look at dogs and consider which he would like for a birthday president. With no guarantee the family would be chosen to adopt Sandy, he and his stepmother visited her each Thursday at the shelter.
Jon knew Sandy had been chosen to be in the play as the lead character’s companion, and would not be available for adoption until late December.
Sandy was chosen to audition for the play because of her honey color, said Joshua Denny of the Lewis and Clark County Humane Society staff. He added the dog had a mild temperament that indicated she would handle herself well in a group of children singing and dancing. [Humane Society of the United States Complete Guide to Dog Care]
After the play was performed a number of times in December, the humane society received applications from six families interested in giving her a home. The number was narrowed to two who took an interest in Sandy before she became a local celebrity.
Shelter officials visited both households before deciding Sandy should go to Jon and his family.
“In the end, it was just a feeling,” Denny said.
Jon said Sandy is settling in well, enjoys sleeping on a bed that the family’s other dog uses and likes to eat liver paste.
Nine other dogs made cameo appearances in “Annie.” Adoptions of seven have been approved.
