Proving the doctors wrong, a miracle arrives

Published: January 2, 2006

It took 22 hours of labor and 20 minutes of pushing for Dorian Bowman to become the Buffalo area’s first baby of 2006.

The dark-haired, round-faced, 7-pound bundle of joy was born in Sisters Hospital at 2:42 a.m. New Year’s Day - just minutes before another boy was born at Women and Children’s Hospital at 2:49 a.m.

“He definitely wanted to make a statement,” said the mother, Christine Blackowski, 24, who added that January births run in her family. Blackowski, her two sisters and her mother all have January birthdays.

Being the first baby of the new year isn’t the only superlative that applies to little Dorian.

Blackowski and the baby’s father, 26-year-old Kevin Bowman, were told by three separate doctors that she could not have children. So they simply stopped worrying about it. And that’s when Blackowski became pregnant, while the North Tonawanda couple were living in Maine because of Bowman’s job.

“A month before we came back, we found out I was six weeks pregnant,” Blackowski said. “I was shocked. I asked, “How?’ ”

“It definitely was a shocker to both of us,” Bowman said.

“He’s a miracle baby,” Blackowski beamed as she looked down at Dorian, who was smiling in his sleep in her arms.

“He’s my pride and joy,” she added.

Blackowski and Bowman were expecting their son any time between Jan. 1 and Jan. 12, but Bowman said he knew from the beginning that his son would be born Jan. 1.

“I talked to her belly and told him to come on the first,” Bowman said. “I told him, “You’re going to be born on New Year’s.’ ”

“He went and told everyone [Dorian] would be here Jan. 1,” said Blackowski, who was not as sure as Bowman was.

Then her water broke on New Year’s Eve morning, and by 11:30 that night, the hospital staff was taking bets, the parents said.

“I was eight centimeters dilated when the ball fell,” said Blackowski, a first-time mother. In addition to the new arrival, Bowman has a 6-year-old daughter, Kali Bowman.

Dorian’s first day was a long one, filled with lots of cameras, congratulations and cuddling.

But by 5:30 p.m. New Year’s Day, the happy little family settled into the hospital room for the night and began watching “The Mask,” a movie starring starring Jim Carrey, on cable television.

How fitting. After all, little Dorian was named after a character in that movie.

“It was the bad guy,” Blackowski said. “When I heard the name, I knew that would be his.”
