Published: December 27, 2005

A forestry company says a large turnout by Manawatu fire-fighters last night prevented a forest blaze at Tangimoana from turning into a major event. [Fire and Ashes: On the Front Lines of American Wildfire]

Between 70 and 100 volunteer and duty firefighters from Bulls, Martin, Rongotea, Himatangi, Tangimoana and Palmerston North, as well as forestry staff, attended the 6.30pm callout, with some crews remaining until midnight.

Duty fire officer from Ernslaw One, Tony Groome, says only four hectares of the 500 hectare coastal forest was destroyed.

He says the forest is a mixture of conservation estate and commercial forestry, and the burnt area was planted in 30 year old radiata pine.

Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
