Boy, 9, rescued after week in well

Published: December 27, 2005

FIREFIGHTERS on Christmas Day rescued a nine-year-old boy who survived for a week at the bottom of a 20m well, according to local news reports.

Tiago Felix de Souza told rescuers that he survived by drinking rain water. [SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea]

The boy was rushed to the intensive care ward in a hospital in Guarulhos, in the greater Sao Paulo metropolitan area, with signs of exhaustion and malnutrition but apparently no broken bones.

Tiago’s father, Benedito Felix Aparecido de Souza, quit his job at an area farm to spend the week searching for his son.

The boy heard his dad when he walked by the well, which was largely covered by vegetation, and called for help.

“I was overcome by great emotion when I found him,” the boy’s father said.

Tiago, the 11th of Mr De Souza’s children, vanished after taking lunch to his father on December 19.
