A bunch of historical artifacts that were stolen from Topkapi Palace Museum last Jun, were left at the entrance of an Istanbul mosque with a note asking that they be returned to the Istanbul museum last Wednesday. The items were stolen over the summer when thieves broke a small window of a depot housing mostly damaged items at the museum.
Istanbul Governor’s Office announced today that the eight artifacts found in two bags in Fatih Husam Bey Tezgahcylar Mosque were the pieces that were stolen from Topkapi Palace Museum on June 27th, 2005.
The artifacts, which included a damaged tablet, two worn-out shawls and a folding screen decorated with star-shaped mother-of-pearl, were later delivered to the Provincial Culture Directorate for inspection.
