Cat alerts woman to fire

Published: December 26, 2005

A woman escaped from her smoke filled South Taft home Wednesday night after a cat alerted her to a fire in the rear of the house.

Kern County Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Racicot said a fire broke out in an enclosed laundry room at the rear of the house at 1035 Wood Street.

It began filling the house with smoke

The woman, whose identity wasn’t immediately known, was asleep in another part of the house.

That’s when a cat jumped on her bed and awoke her, Racicot said.

Alerted to the fire, she was able to crawl out under the thick smoke and escape from the house.

The fire was reported just after 7:30 and controlled a short time later.

While the fire was contained to the rear laundry room, Racicot said, there was extensive smoke damage through the house and firefighters had to tear down part of the ceiling to make sure the fire had not spread into the attic.

An overloaded electrical circuit is believed to have caused the fire
