Good Samaritans rescue woman, 2 children from SUV

Three men who were on their way to work became good Samaritans yesterday when they rescued a woman and her two children from an overturned vehicle that had plunged into an icy Loudoun County pond, the sheriff’s office said.
Iana Lombardo, 37, of the Ashburn area was driving north on Route 659 when she glanced back at her 3-year-old, who was in a child safety seat in the back of the Honda SUV, on the passenger side, the sheriff’s office said.
The Honda went off the right side of the road, and when Lombardo reacted, it veered off the other side and plunged into the iced-over sediment pond, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in water that was three to four feet deep.
Water began to enter the overturned vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
The three men on their way to work were identified as Richard Salvatierra-Pena, 30, of Sterling, Oscar A. Rodas-Mejia, 40, of Fairfax and Henry J. Nunez-Samaniego, 20, of Herndon. They went into the frigid water and managed to roll the Honda onto its side. Then they pulled Lombardo and her children, the 3-year-old and a 2-year-old, from the vehicle.
Lombardo said she had tried to free the children herself but couldn’t, according to authorities. She was treated at a hospital and released; the children were in stable condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
