A Miracle for Millie
Published: December 21, 2005
On June 11, 2005, Millie and Dick Klein of Adrian, MN, attended a beautiful wedding for Millie’s niece in Mankato, MN. After the ceremony and reception Millie and Dick retired to their room at the same hotel where the reception was held. Dick needed to rest his bad knee. Millie left to check out the wedding dance, but she was back in a few minutes feeling very very ill. Dick called 911 and she was rushed to a Mankato hospital and then air lifted to Rochester. On Sunday, June 12, 2005, after many tests, Millie had brain surgery. The doctors thought it was an aneurysm, but because of the large amount of blood they were unable to find it.
Rochester worked hard to keep Millie alive. She was in a deep coma for four weeks! Millie’s two sons, Paul Fromm, New Ulm and Dean Fromm of Boulder, CO, were at their mother’s bedside as much as possible. Dick’s daughters and their families were constant bedside caregivers. Dick’s daughters are Marge and Bill Boecker, Jeanne and Mark Loosbrock, Bev and Wayne Jansen, Mary and Tom Krogman, Ann and Terry Schieck and Laurie and Earl Hokeness.
After a month in Rochester, Millie was transferred to the Mary Jane Brown Nursing Home in Luverne. She had lots and lots of therapy every day. She started to recognize family and friends and even call them by name even though now she doesn’t remember doing that!! At this time Dick was in the Sioux Valley and McKennan Hospitals with surgeries and therapy. It was a bad time for both sets of children.
Friends hosted a surprise birthday party at the Mary Jane Brown Home on August 29th. She remembers the party, all the guests and looked great. Millie has several stylish fun hats and her hair started to grow back!!
She responded to all the therapy and was faithful about doing it. While Millie was still in Rochester, Dick was scheduled for eye surgery in Sioux Falls. Those plans were postponed when he had emergency colon surgery! Dick spent quite a few weeks in Sioux Valley and McKennan hospitals and has no recollection of those many weeks. At that time the Klein “kids” were torn between Rochester and Sioux Falls.
Eventually Dick was transferred to Luverne Hospital to recuperate and Millie was recovering at the Mark Jane Brown Home. Millie was beginning to knit, to read and still doing lots of therapy to improve her walking. Several weeks passed and Dick was transferred to the Mary Jane Brown Home and he and Millie were once again together and in the same room!
On September 16th the Klein’s were discharged from Luverne and spent one night in their home in Adrian. On September 17th they moved to a Golden Horizons apartment in Worthington. The family moved their furniture and did the decorating. It is a beautiful sun filled apartment. Their home in Adrian was sold. Millie spent two weeks at the Fitness Center in Worthington for therapy and exercise. Millie’s hair has grown back, she walks beautifully and now she pushes Dick’s wheelchair to the dining room and they play cards and both can drive their van!!
On November 8th Millie’s sons took her back to Rochester and her delighted and amazed doctors dismissed her!
Millie’s family and many friends saw her miracle right before their eyes!! In five months Millie went from a deep coma to the smiling vibrant lady she is today. Millie and Dick are so grateful for all the prayers, cards, visits and hugs they received and for the miracle God gave her.
