Quick-Thinking Grandfather Saves Family, Cat From Fire

Published: December 20, 2005

A house fire in northwest Baltimore left a family without a home Monday night, but a 74-year-old man, his 5 great grandkids and their cat made it out safely.

Fire officials said the blaze erupted shortly before 7 p.m. in the 4000 block of Duvall Avenue.

Edgar Miller, 74, heard a loud pop while spending the evening with his grandchildren. He told everyone to get out of the house.

“I looked around — saw smoke coming out from upstairs and hollered to the kids come down and get your clothes on,” Miller said.

He said he’s relieved that his family is safe. However, he doesn’t know what he and his family will do about the upcoming holidays as the fire destroyed his great grandchildren’s gifts.

The Red Cross is assisting the family. Fire officials said they are continuing their investigation to see what exactly caused the fire.
