Fire destroys garage — dog, cat saved

Published: December 20, 2005

A two-alarm fire engulfed a garage and caused smoke damage to a home in the 400 block of Fernando Avenue in Palo Alto this morning — but a dog and cat were rescued from the smoke-filled house, according to Battalion Chief Ron Bonfiglio.

The fire gutted the garage, which remained standing but had its interior consumed, Bonfiglio said. Although the house sustained some smoke damage, the fire did not reach it.

No one was injured in the blaze but a dog and a cat were rescued from the house, he said.

“Fire and smoke were visible when our crew arrived,” Bonfiglio said. “Our team did a phenomenal job.”

The fire, which was reported at 9:52 a.m., was brought under control around 10:20 a.m. After extinguishing the fire, crews evacuated the building because of a potential electrical hazard, Bonfiglio said. The fire then rekindled briefly, which prompted firefighters to remain on the scene until noon.

Bonfiglio estimated that damages would total $100,000 for the garage where the fire started. The cause is still under investigation.
