Two rescued after 12 days adrift

Published: December 19, 2005

Two Australians were rescued by fishermen off Vietnam’s coast after 12 days adrift in a lifeboat, Vietnamese officials said.

The men, identified as Mark Smith, 49 and Steven Freeman, 30, were discovered by fisherman on Saturday near Ly Son island about 54km off the coast of central Quang Ngai province, said Nguyen Thanh Tung, deputy head of the island’s People’s Committee.

The Australians told authorities they had left Hong Kong on their newly bought boat on December 4.

The boat was swamped by high waves and sank on December 6, Tung said.

The two drifted at sea in a lifeboat for 12 days before being rescued by Vietnamese fisherman in the area, he said.

They were weak and dehydrated when they were found, and were taken to the island’s clinic for medical treatment, Tung said.

The provincial border guard command sent a speedboat to the island to take the Australians to the mainland, but were forced to turn back because of rough waves, he said.
