Police reach out to families in need

Published: December 19, 2005

Major thanks to the local police departments that annually donate their time to needy children through the “Shop With a Cop” program.

Special appreciation to the Springfield Township Police Department for adding the family of Michelle Harless, whom I featured in a recent column.

The 31-year-old Lakemore mother of four and hair stylist has been battling colon cancer, which has since metastasized to other areas of her body.

Springfield police officer Perry Linaburg is part of the district’s “Fill a Cruiser” drive, which netted three cruiser loads of new toys, food and $1,155 in cash. Linaburg and his colleagues are happily sharing that bounty with the Harlesses and 39 other families in an effort coordinated by Springfield United Methodist Church.

“We’ve adopted the Harless family, which includes a 13-year-old girl, 6-year-old twin boys and a 5-year-old girl,” Linaburg said.

They are shepherding the oldest, Courtney, on an overall “Shop With a Cop,” which provides children with a $110 gift certificate for shopping. That money was raised through the sale of raffle tickets, Linaburg said.
