Math teacher always makes time for her students

The school day rarely ends at 3 p.m. for Elaine Perkins.
A math teacher at Elmira Free Academy for the past 12 years, Perkins can regularly be found in her classroom on the school’s second floor late into the evening, helping students understand a challenging concept.
“I’ll be here after school, yes,” she recently assured a group of calculus students facing an upcoming test on derivatives.
The 47-year-old Elmira resident said that she’s happy to spend the additional time with her students.
“I truly love what I do,” she said. “I enjoy working with the kids.”
EFA senior Samuel Piegdon, 18, credited the additional time he spent working with Perkins with the 94 percent he earned on the Math A Regents exam.
“She’s extremely dedicated,” said Piegdon, who has had a class with Perkins during three of his four years at EFA.
For her devotion to her students and the subject she teaches, Perkins has been named the recipient of the December Outstanding Educator of the Month Award, which recognizes educators in the Twin Tiers who make exceptional contributions to their schools.
Perkins and Elmira Free Academy each will receive $500. The sponsor of the December award is Silicon Carbide Products in Horseheads.
Recipients are nominated by students, parents and colleagues. A panel of judges, chaired by Douglas Tifft, senior vice president of administration at Hardinge Inc. in Horseheads, chooses the winner.
