13 yo Teen rescues grandmother from fire

Published: December 19, 2005

A 13-year-old boy picked up his grandmother and carried her away from a fire that destroyed their Brockton apartment building.

Laura Reid and her 13-year-old son, John Gallagher, were watching television in their second-floor apartment with other family members when fire broke out in their living room, The Enterprise of Brockton reported Monday.

The boy began yelling to other tenants that the building was on fire. Reid and a friend grabbed Reid’s grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, who were visiting, and Gallagher carried his 79-year-old grandmother, who uses a walker, out a side door.

“With the flames, the smoke, you couldn’t get into the room,” Reid said. “(My son) carried his grandmother down the stairs.”

Firefighters said the Saturday night blaze was caused by the 4-year-old, who accidentally tipped over a candle and ignited the couch.

The flames spread quickly and blew out the building’s second-story windows, but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 40 minutes. All the other tenants got out safely and no injuries were reported.
