Angel Tree kids will not be spared gifts this Christmas

Published: December 18, 2005

The children in the Angel Tree program are going to have a wonderful Christmas this year, thanks to some good folks in Clay, Ala.

The Angel Tree program is an organization through Prison Fellowship Ministry. Applications are sent to prisons across the country and given to prisoners who want to make sure their children have a good Christmas. The applications are distributed all over the country and separated into the counties in which the children live. That is when the sponsors from each county take over by taking donations of toys or money.

When Pearl River county sponsor Jane Manuel, a member of First Baptist Church of Carriere met some of the members from Clearview Baptist Church out of Clay, Ala., she knew they were special people.

A group of the church’s members were in the area helping clean up after Hurricane Katrina when Jane told them about the Angel Tree program. After returning home, families in the church decided to individually support 75 Angel Tree kids and buy specifically for those children.

“I was worried that we would not have a good response to the Angel Tree program this year after all that has happened,” said Jane. “But God always takes care of it. He always provides. He answered our prayers.”

Some of the men from Clearview Baptist Church returned last week with the gifts for the Angel Tree kids their church supported. They brought a trailer filled with over 50 brand new bicycles and countless gifts. When unloading their van, the gifts kept coming and coming. They made it a special purpose to make sure these Angel Tree kids would have a reason to smile on Christmas morning.

“These people are so special,” said Jane, overwhelmed by the generosity of the families. “They are wonderful, Christian people.”

If anyone would like to donate new toys to the Angel Tree program, drop boxes are located at PawPaw’s Camper City in Picayune and Gulfport. Monetary donations can be mailed to First Baptist Church of Carriere, P.O. Box 256, Carriere, MS 39426, designated Angel Tree.

“My Angel Tree kids are going to have Christmas,” said Jane. “God did it. I didn’t do anything.”
